Trebon

The town of Trebon, some three hours south of Prague, is a little different from the other spa towns listed on this web site. The ancient town, among the most scenic in the country, wasn't founded near a mineral spring, and the spa industry isn't its sole raison d'etre. Trebon's specialty isn't mineral water: it's peat, which it is found in plentiful supply in the nearby peat bogs. The peat, rich in sulphur and iron, is being successfully used for the treatment of muscle, bone, and joint conditions such as muscle or joint rheumatism and other degenerative bone, joint, and spine conditions. Of course, you can take a peat bath just for the fun of it; it's great for your skin.

Trebon has only two major spa houses (the Berta and the Aurora), both modern in style and very simple architecturally, with contemporary no-frills interiors. What they might miss in ambience is, however, amply made up by the town itself, which boasts a practically intact historical center, a castle and other historic sights, a charming location amidst ponds and woods, and plenty of sightseeing options in the surrounding countryside.

The Trebon spa has an excellent record in improving all kinds of post-operative conditions, so we especially recommend it to those who are seeking to improve their mobility after an accident or operation. This is not a spa for those who want royal-style pampering and Belle-Époque architecture — you will be much happier either in Karlovy Vary or Marianske Lazne. But if you are healthy and active, you might want to come just for a limited program of treatments while spending the rest of your time enjoying Southern Bohemia, one of the country's most beautiful regions, with its unspoiled countryside, ancient castles and picturesque villages.
