Luhacovice
The spa town of Luhacovice is located in the southeastern corner of the
Czech Republic, just outside the town of Zlin and a couple of hours north
of Vienna. Unlike the West Bohemian spas of Karlovy Vary and Marianske
Lazne, Luhacovice only started flourishing in the 20th Century, and
therefore
ranks among the youngest of Czech spas.
The countryside around Luhacovice is known for its pristine environment as
well as natural beauty; the town itself has several different mineral
springs, each with different properties, which makes it quite versatile in
treating a variety of disorders. Increasingly, however, Luhacovice caters
to guests who come to seek relaxation and recreation. Its beautiful
natural setting in a verdant valley, surrounded by woods, makes it an
oasis of peace and quiet.
Architecturally, Luhacovice boasts a unique set of spa buildings, most of
which were designed in the first two decades of the 20th Century by a
single architect, Dusan Jurkovic. Taking cues from the wooden cottages of
his native Slovakia, he created a folkloric version of Art Nouveau here,
lively, colorful, and decorative in style. Nearly all of the spa houses
have been carefully renovated recently and come equipped with all modern
comforts. The just-renovated spa house Jurkovic, the flagship of the spa
company, features a wealth of fine handcrafted detail, as well as the
latest in spa technology.
